Green light to the green cucumbers.
What do we know about cucumbers?
Not more than about avocado or kiwi fruit. It appears that a cucumber is neither fruit nor vegetable, it is a berry and not ripe at that - "agourus" - as the Old Greeks believed. The birthplace of the cucumber is India - it was cultivated there 7 thousand years ago.
Nobody knows when it appeared in Russia. It is known that in the region of Vladimir they grew it 5 - 7 centuries ago - a period of time long enough to forget about foreign origions of this wonderful products.
Suzdal is one of the renowned centers of cucumber production in our region. Since time immemorial the residents of Suzdal had special passion for cucumbers. Anania Fedorov, a Suzdalian priest and the first historian of the town, wrote about it already in the 18-th century.
Suzdalians have been learning the secrets of cucumber - growing for centuries, nursing cucumbers like babies, giving them different names:pikuli - for smaller, zelentzy - for middle-sized and oklyovish - for flawed ones. (The market-gardeners felt sorry for the latter, not so lucky in life).
All these cucumber worries were most important thing. One of the characters in an A.Ostrovsky plays said "And what is a business? What is it in comparison to eternity and a pickled cucumber".
 
One can learn, see and hear a lot of interesting during the Cucumber Festival, which was invented in the Vladimir and Suzdal Museum/Reserve. The best folklore group will perform. You will enjoy deverse souveniers made of wood, clay, paper and rags, with most of them being yellow-green like the hero of the day itself.
A snapshot from the festival - for example in a costume of a cucumber - will be a good keepsake for you.
 Different entertainments are prepared for different tastes. "Cucumber etxtreme" is for those who are really brave and strong. The performance about the adventures of Prince Cucumber and Princess Liana is for the youngsters.
The guests of the festival will be able to try different dishes - soups, jams, rolls, etc. - made of cucumbers.
