The Vladimir and Suzdal Museum-Preserve gives you an opportunity to make a tour of the 20th century – the time, both heroic and terrible, full of hopes and disappointments. The exhibition devoted to the 90th anniversary of the October revolution was opened at the Palaty museum complex in Vladimir.

On November 7, 1917, in Petrograd, at 9:45 p.m., the Aurora cruiser fired a blank shot that was the signal for the Bolshevik assault on the Winter Palace. It led to the Bolshevik’s seizure of power and marked the beginning of the so-called soviet period in the history of this country.

At present, the interest towards the last 90 years is increasing. This time was so contradictory, it contained so many heroic and tragic events that it is extremely difficult to apprehend it and give the soviet period a proper evaluation. Someone favorably recall this time owing to such advantages as their personal confidence in the future, low prices for food and reasonable rent, free medical service and absence of beggars and declassed tramps in the streets… Others can not forget of the Communist Party’s absolute power, of elections without elections, of thousands of innocent victims, of double moral standard, of constant queues and shortages. People in Russia had suffered a lot, before they were given an opportunity to revalue the history of their country.

What kind of experience was derived from the history of the last century? – This is the question which historians of our museum try to find an answer to by creating the new exhibition. They invite us To See, to Recollect, to Think… about the life in the Soviet country in 1917 – 1993. There are about one thousand exhibits connected with the Vladimir Region and displayed here. Many of them can be called extremely rare ones. Among them you can see a life-buoy, a fragment of a deck and rivets from the legendary Aurora cruiser.

Seventy six years… For a man they mean a whole life, for a country’s history they are no more than a mere instant. These years were so rich in epoch-making events, like no other period in Russia’s and the world’s history. It is impossible to give a simple and unanimous appreciation of this period with its achievements and tragedies, hopes and disappointments. Nevertheless, we have no other history. As a poet once wrote: “We do not choose times, we simply live and die in them.”
