Paintings, drawings, sculptures and enamels – different facets of the artist’s creative activity are represented at the exhibition of the works of Zurab Tsereteli, President of the Russian Academy of Arts, People’s Artist of the USSR, UNESCO’s Ambassador of Good Will.
Tsereteli was born on January 4, 1934 in Tbilisi (Georgia). In 1958 he graduated from the Tbilisi Academy of Fine Arts and in 1964 began to work at the Institute of Ethnography and Archeology of the Georgian Academy of Sciences.
In the late 1960s- early 1970s Tsereteli showed himself as a master of monumental art. His sculptural mosaics in the sea resort of Adler were highly appreciated by the famous artist David Alfaro Siqueiros.
Zurab Tsereteli is also famous as a leader of the most challenging art projects. He was a chief designer of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1970s), chief designer of the Moscow Olympiad (1980), artistic director of the construction of the memorial complex on the Poklonnaya Hill in Moscow (1995), chief designer of the reconstruction of the interior of the Cathedral of Christ the Redeemer in Moscow. The artist’s unique works can be seen on the streets and squares, in the cities of Russia and abroad including such states as the USA, Japan, Great Britain, France, Spain, Italy, Brazil, Syria and others.
On his initiative the large-scaled museum projects were created and realized, e.g. the first Russian Museum of Modern Art, the Gallery of Arts museum and exhibition complex of the Russian Academy of Arts.
The appearance of these two complexes revealed another side of his personality, that of a patron of arts. He sponsored the projects with money and masterpieces from his private collection.
The work of this world-famous artist is marked with numerous international awards and honorary titles: member of the Georgian Academy of Sciences (1966), Corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Spain, 1998), Corresponding member of the French Academy of Fine Arts (2002); in 2007 he received the Picasso golden medal of UNESCO.
