The museum was opened for visitors in May, 1983. It's in the cathedral of St. George, the perfect monument of architecture built according to a design of L.Benua in 1856-1928. There's the painting "The Last Judgement" of V.Vasnetsov (1848-1926) and the magnificent mosaic "In Thee Rejoiceth" by his sketch in the interior.
Two thousand items represent the rich collection of samples of Gus-Crystal Works, starting from the second half of the 18th century up to the modern time, and besides the collections of the unique works of Gus-Crystalny's glass designers. The history of the collection creation is connected with the name of I.S.Matsov (1807-1808), one of the factory owners, who began to collect the unique works and the works of mass production.
The represented collection demonstrates all the periods of the country's glass production because the artistic biography of Gus-Crystal Works is typical of the whole glass industry of Russia. The remarkable samples of engraving and diamond cut, the items made in blown technique demonstrate the originality of russian art glass. Traditions and modern tendencies of glass production is the basis of Gus-Crystalny's designers.
The traditions of folk blown glass had been revived in the works of V.Muratov. The works of O.Kozlova are exquisite and graceful. The creation work of V.Korneyev is marked by the respect to traditions of classical diamond cut. E.Rogov reproduces the beauty of russian nature.
The bright decorative ensembles, lyrical compositions and sets of the designers A.Kurilov, V.Kasatkin, S.Zaitsev, R.Axenov are marked with the poetic feeling and irreproachable taste. Many items of the museum collection had been displayed at the russian and international exhibitions which took place in USA (1990), Sweden (1990), France (1991). The unique exhibits of the 19th century and modern works, represented in the museum, were published in the Catalogue of Gorning Museum of glass (USA, 1990).
