The museum of wooden architecture and peasants' life

The Museum of Wooden Architecture was organized in the 1960s. Suzdal has not preserved wooden monuments of architecture. Such churches, houses and household buildings (which state was deplorable) were moved from the villages of the Vladimir region. The first rare sample of wooden architecture appeared in the Kremlin. That was the Church of St. Nicholas.

The place for the museum was chosen on the bank of the Kamenka river on the site of the former St. Demetrius Monastery. The museum was created according to the plan worked out by the Vladimir restoration workshop. Interiors of the monuments were reconstructed by the Vladimir and Suzdal Museum Reserve. The museum represents a village street with houses, churches and household buildings placed at the outskirts of the village. Two churches of the 18th century - the Church of the Transfiguration and the Church of the Resurrection - are the compositional center of the museum. The Church of the Transfiguration is of special interest as a sample of a multi-tiered beautifully decorated village church. The Church of the Resurrection is also a multi-tiered building which is crowned by a tent put on the octahedron. The church was built in the shape of a ship - that is the sanctuary, the main body, the bell tower and the western porch were built along the same axis. The church has an unusual bell tower with its framework widening upwards. To the west of the church runs the street with hewn wooden houses and household buildings. The houses are attractive due to their architecture and wooden decoration. A house of a peasant of moderate means is a sample of a peasant's dwelling typical of the central part of Russia. It is the house of the 19th century with a gable roof made of boards and a facade decorated with blind carving. The house has a planning typical of the 19th century: izba (a heated room), seni (a kind of a corridor) and klet (an unheated part of a house).

Next to this house there is another one which could belong to a rich family. It is a two-story building. On the ground floor there is a weaving workshop with three looms for hired workers. There is one more house decorated with wooden carving. On the board above the windows there is the date when the house was built - 1861. Next to the entrance to the museum there is a big house with a mezzanine, a kind of a peasants' dwelling widely spread in the second half of the 19th century. Not far from the above-mentioned houses there are household buildings - two windmills, a granary, a well with a huge wheel and special barns to dry sheaves. Silhouettes of the houses, churches and windmills create an expressive panorama of the museum which is in harmony with Suzdal’s landscape.

Interiors were reconstructed in the houses according to the social principle - a house of an average peasant and a house of a rich peasant. Peasants' way of life have been formed in the course of centuries, all things were rationally placed in the house. A Russian stove is to the left of the entrance. It was used for heating, cooking and drying corn and vegetables. It could be used as a bed too. A women's corner is a part of the house next to the stove, where food was prepared and kitchen utensils were kept. To the right of the door there is a host's bench where he worked and had a rest. In the so-called red (i.e. beautiful) corner there is a table and an icon above it. There are broad built-in benches along the walls.

An interior of the rich house illustrates the influence of urban way of life to peasants' life. A kerosene lamp, a "Singer" sewing machine, a wooden bed instead of a bench are symbols of well-being and prosperity. A great number of visitors gather at the museum to take part in the Folk Crafts Festival on Whitsunday every year. They can see the work of skilled craftsmen who participate in the festival. During the festival anyone can try to work with a potters' wheel, a weaving loom and a scythe. Different folklore ensembles give performances. These festivals attract people from all over the world.
