An item from the archaeological collection of the museum
Date (century): 25 thousand years ago
Material, technique: mammoth tusk; carving, grinding, drilling
Dimensions: H–5.6 cm; width – 1–4 mm
The figurine was found during the excavations at the Sunghir Upper Paleolithic Site by O. Bader in 1957.
It is a flat figurine with rows of hollows along its spine and feet, covered with ochre. The surface of the figurine is thoroughly polished. There is a hole (d=2–2.5 mm) drilled on its hind leg.
It was used as an amulet, the surface thoroughly polished is an evidence to that. The head of the animal is as sharp as a blade and it makes it possible to assume that it could be used as an instrument.
It is widely known as a symbol of the Sunghir Site.
